The clock will strike and we will not suck our fingers’: Shafiqur Rahman

Opposition leader and Amir of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Dr. Shafiqur Rahman addressed a rally organized to mark the second anniversary of the July Uprising. He expressed concern over the current political situation in the country and said that everyone should be aware of protecting the country’s interests and the rights of the people.

He made these remarks as the chief guest at a rally organized by the 11-party alliance at the south gate of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in the capital on Wednesday (August 5).

Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said that looking at the situation in the country, it seems that there is a possibility of a major political change. He called on the countrymen to be ready to establish their rights in a peaceful and democratic way.

In his speech, he claimed that respecting the opinions and popular vote of the people is one of the foundations of running a state. He also commented that any decision against the will of the people is not sustainable for a long time.

He further said that if the injustices and oppressions against which people have protested in the past are repeated, the people will judge them. Urging the people to respect political parties, he said that democratic behavior can pave the way for political stability.

He further alleged at the rally that political pressure is being created on them in various ways. However, he expressed his determination to continue working according to the expectations of the people without succumbing to any pressure or temptation.

Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said that their goal is to build Bangladesh as a state based on justice, humanity and the rule of law. He also mentioned that democratic and peaceful political programs will continue to achieve that goal.
