PSG President Under Investigation Over Alleged Conflict of Interest Regarding Broadcasting Rights

A preliminary investigation is underway in France against Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the president of the French club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), regarding allegations of a conflict of interest. The probe centers on his role in a 2024 meeting concerning Ligue 1 broadcasting rights. The Paris prosecutor's office confirmed the matter on Sunday.

Al-Khelaifi serves simultaneously as the president of PSG and the chairman of beIN Media Group. Investigators are examining whether his participation in decisions regarding broadcasting rights while holding these dual roles created an unlawful conflict of interest.

The French sports daily L'Équipe first reported the investigation. The Paris prosecutor's office later stated that the probe began last April based on information provided by the anti-corruption organization Anticor. The country's financial and anti-corruption police are examining the case.

The Meeting at the Center of the Investigation

The investigation focuses on a meeting held in July 2024 with representatives of the French Professional Football League (LFP).

A day prior to that meeting, beIN Sports had submitted a proposal worth €100 million to secure the rights to broadcast one Ligue 1 match live each week. The French league authorities subsequently accepted the proposal.

Anticor alleges that Al-Khelaifi participated in discussions regarding the approval of the beIN Sports proposal while serving as the chairman of beIN Media Group. According to the organization, this raised questions regarding a conflict of interest concerning his impartiality and independence.

Citing a source close to the case, AFP reported that Anticor also alleged Al-Khelaifi pressured the presidents of other Ligue 1 clubs to accept the beIN Sports proposal.

However, these allegations remain under investigation and have not been proven in court.

Al-Khelaifi Denies Allegations

Al-Khelaifi's lawyer, Renaud Semerdjian, has denied the allegations. According to him, the accusations brought against Al-Khelaifi lack any legal or factual basis.

He further asserted that his client has always remained independent, impartial, and objective in the discharge of his duties. Al-Khelaifi and beIN have also denied allegations of a conflict of interest regarding the broadcasting rights negotiations. Consequently, it is not possible to reach a definitive conclusion about the veracity of the allegations until the investigation is concluded.
