On July 14, a report was published at the same time with the title '2.5 thousand Taka CCTV camera purchased at 32 thousand'. Due to this news, daily Samakal Ghatail representative and general secretary of Ghatail Press Club. Upazila Sagardighi Union Chairman Md. Habibullah has threatened to break Masum Mia's hands and feet. In this incident, a general diary was made at the police station on Tuesday night.
The chairman proposed the installation of CCTV cameras in Sagardighi Union Parishad in the development project of Rural Infrastructure Maintenance (T,R-General 3rd Phase) program in the financial year 2023-24. 1 lakh 64 thousand taka has been allocated. Samakal's investigation revealed that only five CCTV cameras of the 'Campro' brand have been installed with the allocated money. By checking the price of this brand in the 'Golden Sun' camera shop of Dhaka's ICT building, it is known that the price of a good quality CCTV camera is Tk 2,450. Accordingly, the price of five cameras is 12 thousand 250 taka. However, the allocation for this project was 1 lakh 64 thousand taka. He became angry with Samakal representative after the news of such corruption of Chairman Habibullah was published. Starting from the Union Parishad, he told the people in many places that Samakal representative will be tied and broken hands and feet wherever he is found in Sagardighi area. On August 27, when Syed Mithun and Biplab Hossain Sagardighi, associate members of Ghatail Press Club, went to collect news, the chairman told them that Samkal correspondent Masum Sagardighi would be crippled if his hands and feet were found. He told his army to do this kind of thing. Earlier on August 22, in front of the Ghatail Upazila Project Implementation Office, Chairman Habibullah showed the employees of that office the news published at the same time and said to them, 'Sagardighi people are set, if they find Masum in that area, I will tear them hand and foot.' The words were caught on CCTV cameras. The video audio recorded in the camera is preserved by the contemporary.
Sagardighi UP Chairman Md. Habibullah was contacted on mobile phone about the threat, he refused to talk on the phone.
Mohammad Kamal Hossain, President of Ghatail Press Club, said that the threat to the journalist for publishing the news of corruption is definitely nefarious. Everyone has the right to protest the published news. Strongly protest the incident of threatening without giving it. We respect the law. We will fight the matter legally.
General Diary Investigation Officer Ghatail Police Station Deputy Inspector Md. Shahiduzzaman said that a general diary has been filed at the police station in the case of threats to Samakal correspondent and General Secretary of Ghatail Press Club. Legal action will be taken after investigation.
How do you see the issue of threatening journalists for reporting corruption? Ghatail Upazila Nirbahi Officer Irtija Hasan said, "I am aware of the matter and will inform the higher authorities." Necessary action will be taken after investigation.
