The High Court has granted bail to Baul artist Abul Sarkar in a blasphemy case. At the same time, the court has issued a rule asking why he should not be granted permanent bail.
A High Court bench comprising Justices Atwar Rahman and Sagir Hossain gave the order on Monday (April 6).
Earlier, on the night of November 20, police arrested him from a singing event in Madaripur. The next day, a case was filed at Ghior Police Station in Manikganj. The case alleged that he made statements that hurt religious sentiments while singing on the stage of a fair.
Later, when he was arrested and produced in court, the judge ordered him to be sent to jail.
In addition, another case was filed against him in a Dhaka court on December 1. It was alleged that his song contained disrespectful and insulting comments about Allah, which hurt religious sentiments.
The case has been filed under sections 295 and 295 (a) of the Penal Code of 1860.
As a result of this order of the High Court, the Baul artist has been granted bail for the time being.
