Chittagong's top 'terrorist' David Emon on five-day remand in extortion case

A court has granted a five-day remand to Mobarak Hossain alias David Emon in an extortion case filed at the Hathazari Police Station in Chittagong. The remand was granted following a police application in a case filed against him for allegedly attacking a businessman's under-construction building and exploding a cocktail after not receiving extortion.
After the hearing on Wednesday (August 12), the court of Chittagong Judicial Magistrate Lokman Hakim ordered the remand.
Chittagong Additional Superintendent of Police Kazi Mohammad Tarek Aziz confirmed the matter and said that David Emon's remand was sought in connection with the attack and explosion of a cocktail at an under-construction building in the Baradighi Par area of Hathazari. After the hearing, the court granted a five-day remand.
Allegations of extortion of Tk 50 lakh
According to police and case information, an under-construction building belonging to businessman Jasim Uddin in the Baradighi Par area of Hathazari was attacked and a cocktail exploded last July. It is alleged that Tk 50 lakh was demanded from the businessman earlier.
Jasim Uddin filed a case with Hathazari Police Station regarding the attack and explosion. As part of the investigation in that case, David Emon's remand was sought.
Appeared in court under tight security
David Emon was produced in court from the Chittagong Central Jail amid tight security on Wednesday morning. Additional police were deployed in the court premises even before he was brought to court.
Earlier, David Emon was arrested from the Kotwali area of Jessore on July 29. Based on the information he provided, the police conducted a raid in Fatikchhari the next day on July 30 and recovered domestic weapons including a foreign pistol.
Accused in multiple cases
According to police information, there are at least 15 cases against David Emon in various police stations in Chittagong city and the district, including murder, arms and extortion.
When he was produced in court the day after his arrest, he was shown arrested in a murder and an arms case by Fatikchhari police station. Later, the police applied for his remand for questioning. The court granted a total of 10 days of remand in those two cases.
Allegations of conducting activities on behalf of Bara Sajjad
Police officials claim that David Emon is one of the two who led the criminal activities in Chittagong on behalf of top terrorist Sajjad Ali alias Bara Sajjad, who is said to be absconding abroad. The other is Mohammad Raihan.
Police claim that about 50 shooters and associates are active in Bara Sajjad's army. Police also said that David Emon used to call businessmen, expatriates and various institutions regularly to demand extortion.
David Emon was involved in cricket
According to local sources, David Emon, a resident of Kanchannagar area of Fatikchhari upazila of Chittagong, is the eldest of two brothers and two sisters. His father, Md. Musa, was an expatriate in Oman and died a few years ago.
Emon was interested in cricket since his school days. He used to cycle from Kanchannagar to Fatikchhari College ground to practice. Later, he took regular cricket training at his aunt's house in the Oxygen area of Chittagong city. He used to play for Chittagong Brothers Academy and practice at the Kazir Deuri Stadium.
According to police information, Emon became involved with the alleged terrorist Sajjad Ali after August 5, 2024. After that, allegations of his involvement in various criminal activities gradually came to light.
Police said that more information will be available about the allegations against David Emon during the investigation of the case. He will be questioned on these matters during the five-day remand granted by the court.
