Chinese cars are becoming popular in the UK market, the reasons behind it

A few years ago, Chinese cars were not often seen on the roads of the UK. However, that picture has changed rapidly with time. Now, Chinese brands like BYD and Geely are regularly seen on the roads of various cities in the country, including London.

Due to low prices, modern technology and improved build quality, a section of British buyers are now becoming interested in Chinese cars. Especially in the electric vehicle (EV) market, Chinese companies are rapidly strengthening their position.

Among the major car markets in Europe, the UK has now become one of the most important destinations for Chinese car manufacturers.

Sales have increased hundreds of times in a decade

According to automotive consultancy Mobility Global, only 384 Chinese cars were sold in the UK in 2015. This number increased to more than 25,000 in 2020. And last year, Chinese brand car sales exceeded 285,000.

In other words, the presence of Chinese cars in the UK market has increased hundreds of times in just a decade.

Dealerships like Lipscomb Cars, which sells Geely cars, are also seeing increasing interest from buyers. Many buyers say Chinese cars offer more technology than other established brands at similar prices.

Buyer Chris Smith said, “The cars offer a lot more value for money. While many well-known brands charge more, Chinese cars offer more features for the same or less.”

Competitive position on technology and price

A few years ago, Chinese cars were new and unfamiliar to many people in the UK. But now they have become a common sight on the country’s roads, said Will Roberts, an analyst at automotive research firm Benchmark.

He said that it used to be big news to see BYD cars in key areas of London. Now they are so familiar that they are not noticeable.

One of the reasons for the popularity of Chinese cars is their relatively low price. For example, a German-made Volkswagen Tiguan plug-in hybrid in the UK costs more than £43,000. The similar Chinese-made BYD Seal U costs about £10,000 less.

Chinese carmakers are focusing on exports

As demand in China's domestic car market has fallen, the country's carmakers are now placing more emphasis on foreign markets.

According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, China's domestic car sales fell compared to the previous year in the first half of 2026. At the same time, car exports have increased significantly.

Demand for Chinese electric cars is growing, especially in the European market. Another advantage in the UK is that the country has not imposed additional tariffs on plug-in hybrid cars like the European Union.

According to analysts, the electric car market in the UK is expanding rapidly. There is also a demand for affordable cars. These two factors have created big opportunities for Chinese car companies.

Western car manufacturers' concerns

Western car manufacturers have long expressed concerns about the rise of Chinese cars. They allege that Chinese companies are able to market cars at lower prices due to government support.

Despite these complaints, however, the international expansion of Chinese cars has not stopped.

Former General Motors director John McNeil said that Chinese carmakers have established a strong position in the European market in both price and technology. Many cars have technology that is not yet seen in some established European brands.

According to John Panda-Noah, a distributor for Lipscomb Cars, low prices bring buyers to the showroom, but ultimately they make their decisions based on the quality of the car, design and construction.

The rapid rise of Chinese cars has now created new competition in the traditional European car market.
