Tensions again on the Kashmir border. India-Pakistan relations have reached a peak due to a deadly attack by gunmen in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. Amidst this tension, there has been a shootout between Indian and Pakistani soldiers along the Line of Control (LoC).
On Friday (April 25), Indian media NDTV reported that Pakistani soldiers fired at Indian army posts near the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday night. Indian soldiers returned fire. Although no casualties have been reported in this incident so far.
The Indian army said, “Fire was fired from small arms at some places. We have responded befittingly.” However, no official statement has been received from Pakistan or the country's media in this regard yet.
The shooting incident took place at a time when at least 26 people, one of whom was a Nepali citizen, were killed in an attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Kashmir. After the attack, relations between the two countries deteriorated further.
After the attack, India and Pakistan took reciprocal and harsh steps against each other. First, India announced the temporary closure of the Wagah-Attari border post, after which Pakistan also followed suit. Both countries also decided to expel each other's military officers.
India announced that the visas issued to Pakistani citizens under the "Special Visa Waiver" scheme for citizens of SAARC countries have been canceled. In response, Pakistan also took the same decision for Indians.
India also announced the suspension of the Indus River Treaty. In response, Pakistan suspended all bilateral agreements with India and closed its airspace for Indian commercial and passenger flights.
Analysts believe that this wave of border firing and diplomatic tensions is increasing the risk of a state of war between the two countries.
