The ongoing movement against the government's ban on social media and corruption in Nepal has turned into horrific violence. At least 8 people have been killed so far in clashes between protesters and police in different areas of the capital Kathmandu. The army has been deployed in the capital to control the situation.

Citing local media, NDTV reported that the protests that started in the Baneshwar area on Monday morning quickly spread throughout Kathmandu. Students and the young generation are leading the way.

The police are using water cannons, tear shells and rubber bullets to control the protests. On the other hand, the protesters have resisted with sticks, pulses and water bottles. Several protesters even entered the National Parliament building.

To control the situation, the Kathmandu district administration has imposed a curfew from 12:30 pm to 10 pm. However, the clashes are getting more intense as people take to the streets in defiance of this.

Security has been increased around the President's official residence, Sheetal Niwas, the Vice President's residence, the Singha Darbar Palace and the Prime Minister's residence.

On July 28, a government order made it mandatory for social media platforms to register. After the deadline, 26 popular apps including Facebook, X, and WhatsApp were shut down on August 4. However, the Chinese app TikTok was still active.

Angry youths started calling for a movement on TikTok. Later, when the government shut down the internet service, the anger increased further. As a result, protests began last Sunday and turned into horrific violence on Monday.
