Bangladeshi senior police officer Arifuzzaman has been arrested by the Border Security Force (BSF) in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district of India for trying to enter Indian territory illegally through the Kakdanga border in Satkhira. He was arrested on Saturday (August 23) evening. The BSF did not disclose his name at the time for the sake of investigation.

According to initial information, Arifuzzaman was working as Assistant Superintendent of Police of Muktagachha Upazila APBN-2 in Mymensingh district. Earlier, he served as Assistant Superintendent of Police of Rangpur Metropolitan Police.

Satkhira Additional Superintendent of Police Mukit Khan said that he had been temporarily suspended for not reporting to work without permission since October 14 last year and had been absconding since then.

The BSF official described the incident as a 'rare and serious attempt at infiltration'. The arrested person has been handed over to the West Bengal Police. Investigators are probing whether it was a personal infiltration or part of a larger smuggling or criminal gang.

A senior official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told ANI, “Such infiltration by a serving Bangladeshi police officer is indeed rare. It has created new concerns in border surveillance and between the two countries. Whether his motive was personal or part of a plan will be known after the investigation.”

Subedar Kamruzzaman of Kakdanga BGB said that an investigation is underway and detailed information will be available soon.
