The court has sent Nationalist Krishak Dal General Secretary Shahidul Islam Babul to jail, who was convicted in a case filed on charges of obstructing government work and holding an illegal assembly. On Monday (August 18), the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Saifuzzaman rejected his bail application and ordered him to be sent to jail.

Earlier, Shahidul Islam Babul surrendered to the court through his lawyer and applied for bail on the condition of an appeal. However, after the hearing, the court rejected the application.

The defendant's lawyer Sadequl Islam Bhuiyan (Jadu) said, "Shahidul Islam Babul surrendered and applied for bail on the condition of an appeal. The court rejected the application and sent him to jail. We will apply for bail in the High Court. We hope that he will get bail there."

According to the case file, on October 31, 2017, when BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was returning to Gulshan after a visit to Cox's Bazar, party leaders and activists raised anti-government slogans in Paltan in the capital. They blocked the VIP Road and tried to vandalize it. In this incident, Sub-Inspector (SI) of Paltan Police Station Mohammad Ibrahim Khalil filed a case on the same day.

After investigating the case, the investigation officer, SI Ataur Rahman of the same police station, submitted a charge sheet to the court on July 19, 2019. After a long trial process, the court announced the verdict on November 23, 2023.

In the verdict, Shahidul Islam Babul was sentenced to two and a half years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of two thousand taka (7 days of imprisonment in default). In another case, he was sentenced to one year of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of two thousand taka (7 days of imprisonment in default).

He was absconding at the time of the verdict. For this, the court issued a warrant against him.
