Iran Claims Downing of US MQ-1 Drone over Hormuz

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed to have shot down a US MQ-1 drone over the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. The IRGC's public relations office announced this claim on Monday, September 21. However, there has been no immediate confirmation of the incident from the US side.

The IRGC statement indicated that the drone was detected and targeted using an advanced air defense system belonging to its aerospace force. This defense system was reportedly operating under Iran's integrated air defense network.

According to the Iranian forces, the MQ-1 drone was destroyed after being detected in the airspace over the Strait of Hormuz. The IRGC described the incident as another successful operation against US drones in the area in recent times.

The statement also provided details regarding the drone's model. The MQ-1 Predator is an older-generation US military drone; the US Air Force officially retired this model in 2018, shifting its focus to the larger and more capable MQ-9 Reaper.

Iranian military officials claim that the older MQ-1 platform is being redeployed due to losses suffered by the US MQ-9 fleet in recent regional conflicts. However, there has been no public confirmation of this claim from the US Department of Defense.

Iran has previously claimed to have destroyed MQ-1 drones in the Strait of Hormuz area. Tensions between the two sides have escalated regarding drone surveillance and air defense activities in the region amidst recent conflicts.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most critical energy transit routes. Consequently, any military incident involving this waterway raises concerns regarding both regional security and the international transport of energy.
