Police convoy attacked after child's body recovered, OC and 30 injured

Tensions spread over the recovery of the body of a seven-year-old child in Aditmari upazila of Lalmonirhat. An attack occurred on a police convoy while the accused was being taken away. About 30 people, including the OC, police personnel and locals, were injured in the incident.

On Tuesday (June 16) morning, police recovered the body of a first-grade student named Nandini Rani, wrapped in a sack, from a cornfield in Folimari area of ​​Bhelabari union of the upazila.

The deceased Nandini is the daughter of farmer Nalani Barman of the area. Family members said that the child had been missing since Monday afternoon. After much searching, her body was found buried in the cornfield in the morning.

During the investigation of the incident, the police arrested a young man named Bidhan (19), who is related to the child's cousin, as the main suspect. Later, when he was being taken to the police station, angry locals blocked the police's path and tried to snatch the accused.

At one stage, the agitated crowd set fire to the accused's house and attacked the administration vehicle. The police used sound grenades to control the situation. At least 30 people, including policemen and local residents, were injured in the clash.

Later, administration officials including the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police and Upazila Executive Officer went to the spot with additional police and BGB members. While returning with the accused, another attack occurred. Several government vehicles were damaged.

The Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner said that a group of people obstructed the accused while he was being taken away in the legal process and later the convoy was attacked.

The Superintendent of Police said that legal action will be taken in the attack. In addition, additional law enforcement forces have been deployed in the area to control the situation.

After the incident, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Aditmari Police Station Nazmul Islam has been withdrawn. The administration has said that the situation in the area is currently normal.
