Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, a Sanatani leader currently detained in a sedition case, wants to perform the religious rituals marking his late mother’s first death anniversary inside the jail. An application has been submitted seeking permission for him to observe the necessary religious rituals and for a priest to enter the prison.

According to his family, they have requested permission to arrange the ritual on September 20 in a designated cell of the jail. Chinmoy’s elder brother, Ranjan Kumar Dhar, has applied for permission for priest Haradhan Rudra to enter the prison along with the necessary items required for the religious ceremony.

Chinmoy’s mother died on September 10. He was previously released on parole under special conditions to attend her funeral and take part in the last rites. He now wants to complete the subsequent religious ceremony while remaining in custody.

Authorities at Chattogram Central Jail said that there are limited precedents for holding such religious ceremonies inside the prison. The matter will therefore be reviewed in accordance with prison regulations, security considerations and legal requirements before a decision is made based on instructions from the higher authorities.

Chinmoy Krishna Das has been in custody since November last year in connection with a sedition case. Several other cases, including a case related to the killing of a lawyer, are also pending against him.
