Mischievous people set fire to the store room of the Kushtia District Election Office. Some important documents stored in it were burnt. The police initially believe that the incident took place sometime between the early hours of Saturday (December 20) and 9 am.
Since it was a holiday, the office officials and employees could not immediately find out about the matter. Later, after seeing smoke coming out of the office building, the night guard of the election office and local residents quickly brought the fire under control.
District Senior Election Officer Mahbubur Rahman said, ‘Mischievous people set fire to our district server station office. It is believed that the fire was started through a window behind the office. Currently, the CCTV footage is being monitored. No major damage was caused. A general diary will be filed with the Kushtia Model Police Station in this incident.’
Sadar Upazila Election Officer Md. Abu Daud said, ‘Some documents were damaged in the fire, but there was no major damage. It is initially believed that the fire started from the back window of the store room. Kerosene may have been used to set the fire. Security at the office has been beefed up after the incident.’
Kushtia Superintendent of Police Jasim Uddin said, ‘A fire broke out at the District Election Office. Initially, it is believed that petrol was poured through the window and set on fire. Some documents scattered below were burnt. However, the fire was quickly brought under control. All aspects are being investigated to determine whether it was sabotage or an accident.’
Kushtia Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kabir Hossain Matubbar said that an investigation into the incident has been launched. Details will be announced after the investigation.
Upon receiving the news, Kushtia Deputy Commissioner Iqbal Hossain, Sadar Upazila Executive Officer Roknuz Zaman, along with senior RAB and police officials visited the scene.
