Price of Low-Tier Cigarettes Raised Again; 10 Sticks Now Cost Tk 65

The price of low-tier, or budget-friendly, cigarettes in the country has been raised once more. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has set the minimum price for a pack of 10 cigarettes at Tk 65, up from the previous Tk 62.
Details regarding this new pricing were announced in an NBR notification issued on Wednesday, September 16.
Previously, the price for a pack of 10 low-tier cigarettes had been increased from Tk 60 to Tk 62 in the budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year. The latest decision adds another Tk 3 to the cost, bringing the minimum price for a pack of 10 low-tier cigarettes to Tk 65.
However, prices for other tiers of cigarettes remain unchanged. The price for a pack of 10 medium-tier cigarettes stays at Tk 92, high-tier at Tk 160, and premium-tier at Tk 210 or higher.
The new notification will primarily impact the market for low-cost cigarettes. Consumers of low-tier cigarettes will now have to pay at least Tk 3 more per pack of 10 compared to before.
For a long time, the government has pursued a policy of discouraging tobacco use while simultaneously increasing revenue collection from tobacco products by adjusting prices and tax rates. It remains to be seen how this new pricing will affect the market for low-tier cigarettes.
