Flash floods in Spain's eastern province of Valencia have killed at least 51 people. Valencia's provincial government reported flash floods in various parts of the province on Wednesday following heavy and continuous rain since Tuesday.
A number of videos have been shared on social media in Spain from different areas affected by the floods. In those videos, it is seen that many people are stuck in water, many have even climbed trees to save themselves from being washed away by the current of water.
Valencia's governor told a news conference on Wednesday that remote areas of the province have been cut off by flooding and that no trace of people living in those areas can be found.
"The situation is so dire that even the disaster response department personnel are unable to reach those areas."
Due to the flooding, trains have been suspended in the capital Madrid and Barcelona, and schools and offices have been closed. A video footage shows disaster response workers trying to rescue people stuck in cars amid heavy rain in the city of Aljira, Valencia.
Spain's central government has already deployed several army units to assist emergency workers in the rescue efforts. These soldiers are skilled in conducting rescue operations.
The rain hasn't stopped in Valencia yet. Spain's central meteorological agency Emet issued a red warning for Valencia in the latest forecast, saying the situation will worsen if the rain does not stop soon.
