The Data Protection Commission (DPC) of Ireland has fined video sharing app TikTok a huge amount. The Chinese-owned app has been fined 530 million euros or about 7296 crore taka for violating the European Union (EU) data protection rules.

A report by the British media The Guardian said that TikTok failed to ensure that the Chinese government was not using or monitoring the data of European users when sending it to China. The DPC has taken this action due to this failure.

According to the DPC, TikTok did not properly follow the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) when transferring the data of European Economic Area (EEA) users to China. The company did not take into account how secure that data would be within the Chinese legal framework.

The DPC monitors TikTok's activities in Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, in addition to the 27 member states of the European Union. The decision to impose the fine came after analyzing TikTok's activities in these regions.

Fears of ban in the US, eyes now on Japan

Meanwhile, TikTok is in danger of being banned in the US. In such a situation, they are focusing on expanding their business in other countries. As part of this, the company has now planned to enter the Japanese e-commerce market.

Japanese media Nikkei reported that they are going to launch an online marketing platform called 'TikTok Shop' in Japan in the next few months. Sources said that the work of recruiting sellers has also begun. Although Reuters contacted TikTok for comment on this matter, TikTok did not respond.

According to analysts, these fines and the possibility of bans could have a major impact on TikTok's future business plans worldwide.
