The United States has taken steps to sell the Chinese-owned video sharing platform TikTok. The plan was announced in an executive order signed by US President Donald Trump. The order states that TikTok's operations will be sold to various investors in the United States and around the world.
In the order signed on Thursday, Vice President JD Vance said that the purchase of TikTok's business in the United States would be valued at $14 billion (14 billion). Although analysts believe this is lower than previous estimates.
A law to sell TikTok has been postponed until January 20. According to the law, if the Chinese owners object to the sale of TikTok, the platform will be banned in the United States. In the meantime, TikTok's US-based operations will be separated from the global platform, investors will be recruited and China's approval will be obtained.
Trump said that Chinese President Xi Jinping supported the plan. Trump said, "I have discussed with President Xi. He has approved our plan to move forward."
On the other hand, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiaqun said on Friday, “We hope the US government will ensure an open, fair and non-discriminatory environment for Chinese investors.” TikTok did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
TikTok has 170 million users in the US, and according to Trump, the platform played a key role in his victory in the last presidential election. His personal TikTok account has 15 million followers.
One of the potential buyers of TikTok could be Rupert Murdoch, CEO of Dell Technologies, who is associated with Fox Corp and News Corp. In addition, the royal family of Abu Dhabi is also likely to be a partner in TikTok’s business in the US.
