Tension has flared up again in the northeastern state of Manipur in India. Recently, widespread protests have started across the state over allegations that a government bus was ordered to remove the word 'Manipur', which has made the situation a firestorm.
The incident began around the Shirui Lily festival in Ukhrul district of the state. This festival is an annual festival organized around the unique and rare flower of Manipur, the 'Shirui Lily'. This year, journalists from various media outlets were being taken to cover the festival in a government bus, which had the words "Manipur State Transport" written on it. But it has been alleged that the security forces at the Goaltabir check post ordered the bus authorities to cover the word "Manipur".
As soon as the news of this order spread, strong reactions started in different parts of the state. Many see it as an attack on the existence and dignity of the state of Manipur. The general public, students and civil society expressed their anger over various videos and messages circulating on social media.
Although the state government formed a special investigation committee to bring the situation under control, it failed to reassure the protesters. Over the past week, processions, sit-ins and programs to prevent employees from entering various central government offices have started in various cities including the capital Imphal. Clashes also broke out with the police in many places, resulting in injuries to many people.
Experts say that such an incident has created new tension in Manipur, which has been plagued by ethnic divisions and political discontent for a long time. Various human rights organizations and civic forums have already demanded an impartial investigation into the incident and punishment of the guilty.
Currently, the situation is tense in the state. The deployment of security forces has been increased and the administration has appealed to the public to remain calm. However, it is still uncertain which direction the situation will take.
