The Ukrainian capital Kiev has once again been subjected to a fierce drone and missile attack by Russia. The attack, which began at midnight local time on Sunday (September 28), lasted for hours. International media outlet Reuters reported that this time, Russian troops have launched the largest attack on the capital and surrounding areas since the start of the full-scale war in 2022.
The head of the military administration in Kiev, Timur Tkachenko, said that at least three people were killed and 10 others were injured in the attack. Among the injured, a 12-year-old girl is said to be in critical condition. Although the child's death has not been officially confirmed.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Tsybikha called it a "major attack" and said,
"Russia has used hundreds of drones and missiles. Putin and his government must understand that they will pay the price for continuing the war. Only through punitive sanctions can this aggression be stopped."
Not only the capital, but also the southern Zaporizhia region has been hit by Russian attacks. At least 16 people have been injured and many buildings have been severely damaged, according to local authorities.
Numerous drones were seen circling the skies of Kiev early Sunday. Ukrainian troops repeatedly fired defensive missiles to repel them. The sounds of explosions and anti-aircraft missiles spread panic across the city. Witnesses said the attacks continued until 9:15 a.m.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the Russian attack caused a massive fire at a cardiology hospital in the city. This severely disrupted medical services and patients had to be evacuated to safety.
Many residents have taken refuge in underground metro stations to save their lives in the face of the increasing attacks. Panic and uncertainty are growing among the general public. Authorities claim that this is another horrific example of Russia's war strategy.
