At least 19 people have lost their lives in a horrific plane crash in Uttara in the capital. More than 50 people, most of whom are students, were injured and burned. The tragic accident has cast a shadow of grief over the entire area. A Bangladesh Air Force training plane crashed into a building of Milestone School and College in Uttara shortly after 1 pm on Monday (July 21). The building caught fire immediately after the crash. Many students were staying in the building at the time. Many students were burnt and injured as a result of the accident.
Immediately after the accident, 9 units of the Fire Service and Civil Defense Department and 6 ambulances quickly reached the spot and started rescue work. The rescue operation is still ongoing, said Md. Shahjahan Sikder, Senior Staff Officer of the Media Cell of the Fire Service and Civil Defense Department.
He said, “We have confirmed the death of 19 people so far. The injured have been rushed to the hospital.”
The number of women and children among the burnt victims is high. Most of the burnt victims have been admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery and the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College (DMCH). Doctors say that the condition of several is critical.
Locals said that they rushed after hearing a loud noise. The sky was filled with smoke, panic spread everywhere. Fire and smoke were seen coming out of the building, people started running in panic.
Although the cause of the accident was not immediately known, the authorities concerned said that an investigation has been launched.
