Banks and financial institutions to remain closed on August 5

Banks and non-bank financial institutions across the country will remain closed on August 5 (Tuesday) on the occasion of the 'July Mass Uprising Day'. As the Bangladesh government has declared the day a public holiday, Bangladesh Bank has ordered all scheduled banks and financial institutions in the country to remain closed.

The Financial Institutions and Markets Department of Bangladesh Bank issued a notification on Monday (July 21) stating that all finance companies in the country will be closed on August 5. Earlier, initial instructions were given on July 17 regarding the closure of banks.

According to the government decision, August 5 will be observed as the 'July Mass Uprising Day'. On July 2, the Cabinet Department issued a notification and declared the day as an official holiday.

The Bangladesh Bank notification said that due to the public holiday, financial activities will not be conducted on that day. Therefore, the concerned individuals and institutions have been requested to prepare in advance to complete the necessary transactions and activities.

Incidentally, August 5, 2024, has been marked as a landmark day in the history of Bangladesh. The government led by Sheikh Hasina lost power, ending a long period of repression, irregularities, vote rigging and authoritarian rule. Sheikh Hasina, who was in power for a long time, was finally forced to leave the country. Through this event, the people of the country achieved victory on the path to re-establishing democracy, in memory of which the 'July Mass Uprising Day' is being celebrated.
