A young man named Ali Akbar (35) died over allegations of stealing fish from a hatchery called 'Allawala' in Khurushkul area of Cox's Bazar Sadar. The deceased Ali Akbar is a resident of Kuliyapara. Locals said the incident took place around 10:30 pm on Sunday (May 4).
In this incident, an agitated mob beat up Rayyan Kashem, the son of the hatchery owner and Cox's Bazar district organizer of the National Citizens Party (NCP). He is the coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement and the son of AB Party central vice-chairman Jahangir Kashem. To escape the beating of the locals, Rayyan tried to defend himself by jumping into the hatchery water. However, the agitated mob started beating him as soon as he got into the water. On receiving the information, the police reached the spot, rescued Rayyan and sent him to the hospital.
The victim's family claims, "Ali Akbar was deliberately called from his house and killed on the pretext of stealing fish."
However, NCP leader Rayyan Kashem has a different claim. Before the attack, he told the media, "Ali Akbar was caught red-handed by security personnel while stealing from their hatchery. Later, he attacked the guards. Ali Akbar was seriously injured when he retaliated in self-defense and later died."
On the incident, Cox's Bazar Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ilyas Khan said, "Upon receiving the news, the police reached the spot at night and recovered Ali Akbar's body from the hatchery and sent it to the hospital morgue for autopsy. Two people named Hossain and Mizan have been arrested from the scene."
The OC also said, "Rayyan Kashem was rescued from the hands of the agitated crowd and taken into police custody and sent to the hospital for treatment. So far, no one has filed a written complaint in this incident."
Extreme tension prevails in the area surrounding the incident. Additional police have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order.
