The police suddenly raided the house of former Narayanganj City Corporation Mayor Dr. Selina Hayat Ivy on Thursday around 12 midnight. As soon as the news of the raid spread, tension spread in the city's Deobhog area. Ivy's activists and supporters came out on the streets and blocked the area and detained the police members.
It is learned that a police team from Narayanganj Sadar Police Station entered Ivy's house, known as Chunka Kutir, and tried to arrest her. At that time, local residents came out on the streets after receiving news of the raid. Barricades were built on two streets in front of Ivy's house using bamboo, wheelbarrows and vans.
Eyewitnesses said that the police members were blocked inside the house. In addition, an announcement was made on the microphone from the mosque in the area, urging the locals to take to the streets.
An eyewitness said, “A few police cars arrived around 11pm. Later, when the police entered the house, they made an announcement at the mosque and we all came out on the streets.”
As of this writing, the police are still inside Ivy’s house. Former mayor Dr. Selina Hayat Ivy is also reportedly at the house.
However, no statement was received from Narayanganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nasir Uddin regarding the purpose of the raid or the reason for Ivy’s arrest.
