Clash between BNP and Jamaat-Shibir leaders and workers in Palashbari of Gaibandha has spread tension in the area. To control the situation, the upazila administration has issued section 144 from 4 pm to 11 pm on Tuesday (June 30). At least eight people were injured in the clash and the Dhaka-Rangpur highway was blocked for some time.
According to local sources, a complaint was first raised against a student camp leader based on an earlier dispute. Later, when the leaders and activists of both sides faced each other in Jundah Bazar area, the clash broke out. Several people were injured on both sides. The seriously injured have been admitted to hospital and one has been sent to Bogra for better treatment. There were also allegations of vandalism and looting of some shops and businesses in the market during the clashes.
Both sides blamed each other for the incident. BNP claimed that Jamaat-Shibir workers attacked them. On the other hand, the Jamaat alleged that BNP workers first beat up one of their leaders over a football match, which later led to a clash.
The police of Palashbari police station said that the situation was brought under control after receiving the information. No written complaint has been received so far. However, if the complaint is received, the police will investigate and take necessary legal action.
