Four journalists from the international media outlet Al Jazeera were killed in an Israeli attack near Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. The victims were journalists Anas Al-Sharif and Mohammed Korieke, and cameramen Ibrahim Zaher and Mohammed Noufal. They were staying in a tent set up for journalists near the main entrance of the hospital.

Al Jazeera strongly condemned the attack, saying it was part of a series of provocative actions by the Israeli forces against its journalists. It had previously accused Anas Al-Sharif of targeting it.

After the attack, the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) announced on Telegram that Anas Al-Sharif was acting as the “head of a terrorist cell” for Hamas under the guise of a journalist. However, they did not comment on the other three journalists killed.

In a video verified by BBC Verify, the bodies of the dead are being carried away. Bystanders shout the name of Mohammed Koriek and a man wearing a press vest identifies the body of Anas al-Sharif.

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, 186 journalists have been killed since the Israeli military operation in Gaza began in October 2023.

The IDF said special measures were taken to avoid civilian casualties before the attack, such as the use of precision ammunition, aerial surveillance, and intelligence-based action. But Al Jazeera sees the attack as a dangerous attempt to hinder the work of journalists.

The incident has sparked a storm of condemnation around the world, with human rights groups demanding a swift trial for the killings.
