Hollywood star Tom Cruise’s latest film, ‘Digger,’ is failing to achieve the expected success at the box office. Despite a substantial investment in the production—directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu—the film’s earnings have been disappointing. The massive costs incurred during production and promotion have raised concerns about the potential for a major financial loss.

According to reports, the production budget for ‘Digger’ ranged between $150 million and $180 million, with an additional $100 million spent on marketing. This brings the total expenditure to an estimated $250 million to $280 million. To recoup this investment, the film requires significant global box office revenue—a target it has yet to reach.

Several factors have been identified as contributing to the film’s poor commercial performance. Reports indicate that during its opening weekend in the North American market, the film earned only $8 million. This initial figure falls short of the audience interest typically expected for a film featuring a star of Tom Cruise’s caliber, casting doubt on its ability to recover at the box office.

In ‘Digger,’ Tom Cruise steps away from his conventional action-hero persona to take on a different kind of role. He portrays Digger Rockwell, an eccentric oil tycoon. The film, a dark political satire, also features the actor in a transformed appearance, achieved through the use of prosthetic makeup. Analysts suggest that the film’s genre does not align with what audiences have come to expect from Cruise, who is best known for high-octane action franchises like ‘Mission: Impossible’ and ‘Top Gun.’

Questions have also been raised regarding the film’s promotional strategy and its narrative style. Reports note that the trailer left audiences confused as to whether the film was an action-thriller or a political satire. Following its release, the film has received a mixed response from both critics and audiences. The report mentions a ‘C+’ rating on CinemaScore and a 7.5 rating on IMDb.

According to the latest reports, the film’s global earnings stand at $46.4 million. However, additional revenue may be generated through the sale of OTT, satellite, and other rights, beyond theatrical box office returns. Even so, if the earnings remain low relative to its large budget, the film could end up being considered one of the biggest commercial failures of Tom Cruise’s career.
