The world's most expensive toilet is now up for auction. British multinational company Sotheby's announced on Friday (November 3) that it will auction the sculpture titled 'America' by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan.
The toilet that will be auctioned is fully functional and became famous worldwide after it was stolen from Blenheim Palace in England in 2019. It is made of 101.2 kg of gold.
The auction of this gold toilet will start on November 18 in New York and its starting price is estimated at $10 million.
David Galperin, head of the contemporary art department at Sotheby's in New York, said that Maurizio Cattelan is a complete provocateur and successful artist in the art world. Examples of some of his other works:
'Comedian' (a banana taped to a wall) sold at auction for $6.2 million.
‘Him’ (a kneeling sculpture of Adolf Hitler) sold at auction for $17.2 million.
Artist Maurizio Cattelan said he created ‘America’, or the gold toilet, to satirize excess wealth. He once said,
“Whatever you eat, a $200 lunch or a $2 hot dog—the result is the same on the toilet.”
