Iran Seizes Foreign Oil Tankers, Heightening Tensions in the Gulf

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has seized two foreign oil tankers along with their foreign crew members in the Gulf waters on charges of fuel smuggling, triggering heightened regional tensions. The seizure took place on Thursday, according to Iran’s state-run news agency Tasnim.
The report said Iranian military forces intercepted the two fuel-laden tankers in Iran’s coastal waters early Thursday. The IRGC claimed the vessels were engaged in illegal fuel smuggling operations.
However, Iranian authorities did not immediately disclose the flag states of the seized tankers or the nationalities of the crew members on board.
State media further reported that the tankers were carrying more than one million liters of smuggled fuel. A total of 15 foreign crew members were detained and handed over to Iran’s judicial authorities, the IRGC said.
The incident comes at a time of heightened tensions between Iran and the United States in the region, particularly amid widespread unrest inside Iran. Protests that began late last December over rising commodity prices later escalated into broader anti-government demonstrations.
Iranian authorities responded to the protests with force. International human rights organizations have claimed that more than 5,000 people were killed during the crackdown. Following Iran’s suppression of the protests and renewed warnings from U.S. President Donald Trump urging Tehran to comply with the nuclear deal, Washington has deployed a naval fleet to the region, further intensifying tensions.
