A wide discussion has begun over the new order to set up 'holding centers' in every district of West Bengal, India, for suspected illegal immigrants. The state's home department has said that those suspected of residing illegally will be detained and kept in these centers. Later, after verifying their citizenship, arrangements will be made to send them back to their home countries if necessary.

Administrative sources said that this step is being taken based on the previous instructions of the Union Home Ministry. According to the new order, suspected individuals will be kept in holding centers for a maximum of 30 days to verify their citizenship. If they fail to show valid documents, initiatives may be taken to send them back to their home countries through subsequent legal processes.

Although such individuals have been kept in general jails so far, this time the administration is emphasizing on setting up separate holding centers. Recently, the 'identify, erase and send back' policy was mentioned to prevent infiltration into the state. After that, this new order has also gained political importance.

However, there has also been a debate on the issue. The opposition alleges that if there is a possibility to detain someone based solely on suspicion, ordinary people, especially the poor and minorities in border areas, may be subjected to harassment. However, the administration claims that the entire process will be conducted within the legal framework and the main goal of this initiative is to ensure the security of the country.
