UK tightens social media restrictions for children

The UK government is set to take major steps to strengthen online safety for children and teenagers. According to the new plan, strict restrictions may be imposed on the use of popular social media for those under the age of 16.
The proposals under consideration by the British government have been to limit access to several digital platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. In addition, discussions are underway to bring new policies on live streaming facilities and the opportunity to communicate with strangers in online games.
The government claims that the risks to children's mental health, privacy and safety on digital platforms are increasing day by day. Initiatives have been taken to create a new legal framework to reduce these risks.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that ensuring a safe digital environment for the current generation of children is one of the government's priorities. He believes that in addition to taking advantage of technology, it is necessary to protect children from potential harmful effects.
The proposed policy may include separate guidelines not only on social media, but also on the use of various online services based on artificial intelligence. In addition, the issue of imposing restrictions on the use of social media for teenagers outside of certain hours is also under discussion.
However, there are also differences of opinion on this initiative. Some critics believe that more emphasis should be placed on digital education and awareness-raising instead of imposing direct bans. According to them, excessive control could push children towards alternative and unregulated online platforms.
According to analysts, if implemented, the law will be considered one of the strictest policies in the world to control children's online activities and may encourage other countries to take similar initiatives.
