The country's Supreme Court has ordered the extension of the house arrest of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. The court made this decision considering his physical illness and medical needs.

After his defeat in the 2022 presidential election, Bolsonaro was charged with plotting a coup against President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Later, when he was found guilty in court, he was sentenced to 27 years in prison. The high court upheld the sentence even after an appeal.

Bolsonaro had been in prison since November 2025. However, in March 2026, the court allowed him to remain under house arrest for 90 days.

After that period expired, his lawyers applied for an extension of the house arrest. The application said that Bolsonaro had been suffering from various physical complications since being stabbed during the 2018 election campaign. So he can get the necessary treatment better if he is at home instead of in prison.

After the hearing, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said that Bolsonaro did not break any rules during his previous house arrest. Therefore, it is reasonable to continue his house arrest from humanitarian considerations.

As a result of this court decision, the 71-year-old former president does not have to return to prison for the time being.
