The four biggest mistakes Muslims make on Friday

Published: 01:02 12 September 2025
The best day of the week is Friday. The status of this day is so high that Surah Al-Jumu'ah has been specially revealed in the Holy Quran. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) has described the importance of Friday in numerous hadiths. Friday prayers are a very important act of worship for Muslims. But unfortunately, many times, some mistakes are made without knowing or due to negligence. Below are four common mistakes and things to do—
One. Going to the mosque without cleanliness
Cleanliness is part of faith. Especially on Friday, taking a bath, using the miswak and using perfume are very Sunnah. It is mentioned in the hadith,
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said—
“It is obligatory for every adult to take a bath on Friday. One should also use the miswak and if possible, it is better to use perfume.”
(Bukhari, Hadith: 880)
Therefore, one should take a bath on Friday, wear clean clothes, and use perfume and go to the mosque.
Two. Being busy with work after the call to prayer
It is not permissible to be busy with worldly work after the call to prayer for Friday. It is obligatory to leave for the mosque quickly.
In a hadith, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated—
“People used to be busy with their work, and when they went to pray for Friday, they would still be in that state. So they were told, ‘It is better for you to take a bath.’”
(Bukhari, Hadith: 903; Muslim, Hadith: 847)
Three. Not listening to the sermon attentively
The sermon is an important part of the Friday prayer. Listening to the sermon attentively is part of worship.
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said—
“Whoever performs ablution and comes to Friday, listens to the sermon attentively in silence, his sins from one Friday to the next will be forgiven, plus three additional days.”
(Muslim, Hadith: 1873)
Therefore, it is important to refrain from talking or inattention during the sermon.
4. Talking during the sermon
It is necessary to remain completely silent during the sermon. It is even forbidden to say ‘shut up’ to someone nearby.
It is stated in the Hadith—
“If the Imam is delivering the sermon on Friday, and you say ‘shut up’ to the worshipper nearby, that too will be useless.”
(Bukhari, Hadith: 934; Muslim, Hadith: 851)
Friday is a day of blessing, mercy and forgiveness for Muslims. Therefore, cleanliness, going to the mosque quickly after the call to prayer, listening to the sermon attentively and maintaining silence are very important to preserve the dignity of this day. If you follow these small things, Friday worship will be more complete and acceptable.
