The interim government's chief advisor, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has announced the government's preparations to hold the national elections by December this year. BNP has received some relief from the government's assurance, but the party wants to put pressure on the government by demanding that the elections be held on time.
Despite receiving assurances about the government's preparations for the start of the election process, BNP leaders fear that the elections may be delayed. They believe that various Islamic parties and a section of students are also interested in postponing the election process. In this situation, BNP will pressure the government to announce an election roadmap.
Last Monday, the party leaders discussed this issue at the meeting of the National Standing Committee, the highest policy-making forum of BNP. BNP's acting chairman Tarique Rahman joined the meeting virtually. There, BNP's future programs were discussed in detail.
BNP leaders said in the meeting, "Chief Advisor Dr. Yunus has assured that arrangements will be made for quick elections, but we think that the elections may be delayed due to conspiracies from various parties." The party will organize meetings and rallies across the country to pressure the government to announce the election roadmap, which will force the government to move forward.
In addition, the meeting also discussed the issue of rising commodity prices and BNP expressed hope that the government will take effective steps quickly. Election preparations and the party's strategy were further discussed.
Meanwhile, the BNP party has clarified its position on the incidents of vandalism and arson that occurred at various places including Dhanmondi No. 32 on February 5, saying that they do not support any anarchic situation and will present their position on this issue in various meetings and seminars.
