At a discussion meeting organized to mark the 45th martyrdom anniversary of martyred President Ziaur Rahman, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid Islam said that BNP has no alternative to protect the security, interests and state resources of the country's people. He claimed that Bangladesh is safe only in the hands of the BNP government and this party is the true representative of the people.
He made these remarks as the chief guest at a discussion meeting and prayer meeting organized at Shaheed Muktijoddha Akramunnesa Girls' High School ground in Nagarkanda Upazila Sadar, Faridpur on Saturday (May 30). Shama Obaid alleged that since independence, various quarters have been conspiring against the formation of a strong and sovereign Bangladesh and that attempt is still ongoing. He called on leaders and activists to remain united in confronting these conspiracies.
He said that in the last 17 years, the people of the country have been subjected to various forms of torture, corruption and extortion. Even though the dictatorial regime fell through the July Movement, their associates are still active. He also commented that various circles are conspiring in various ways to disrupt the success of the current government.
Shama Obaid said that martyred President Ziaur Rahman had laid the foundation for the country's economic and social development. He took the country forward on the path of self-reliance through agriculture, industry, remittance, canal excavation programs and employment generation. He called on the leaders and activists to follow his ideals and work for the development of the country and establishment of democracy.
In the last part of his speech, he said that martyred Zia had dreamed of empowering the youth, students and women of the country. Everyone will have to work unitedly to realize that dream. After the discussion meeting, a special prayer mahfil was held to pray for the forgiveness of the soul of martyred Ziaur Rahman, in which leaders and activists of BNP and its affiliates participated.
