Sheikh Hasina to be charged, live broadcast likely

The prosecution department is going to file a formal charge against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the International Crimes Tribunal tomorrow, June 1, on charges of crimes against humanity. Chief Prosecutor Gazi M.H. Tamim confirmed that the charge is being raised in connection with the genocide, abduction, torture and persecution that took place in July and August. He said, “This case is an important milestone in the history of Bangladesh. After analyzing the evidence, testimony and documents available to us, 8 specific charges have been framed, each of which contains evidence of Sheikh Hasina’s direct or indirect involvement.”
According to prosecution sources, the charge sheet includes 4 major incidents of genocide, 3 incidents of extrajudicial killings and a serious allegation of torture of women. The statements of about 50 eyewitnesses and victims, reports from international human rights organizations, video footage and photographs have been attached to the charge sheet. In addition, internal documents of state forces and some audio clips will also be presented as evidence.
Gazi Tamim also said that the trial of this case may be broadcast live to ensure the public's right to know and the transparency of the trial process. The tribunal's approval has been sought in this regard. If permission is granted, the trial proceedings will begin to be broadcast live on television and online from tomorrow. Even foreign media and international observers may be invited to observe the trial.
In July-August 2023, there was a widespread crackdown by law enforcement agencies in the context of the opposition parties' movements in Bangladesh. According to information from various human rights organizations, about 300 people were killed during this time and thousands of people disappeared or were detained. The tribunal prosecution formed the case after conducting a preliminary investigation on the basis that ‘crimes against humanity have been committed’ based on these incidents.
On the other hand, lawyers close to Sheikh Hasina have described the allegations as a complete political vendetta. They say, “The current government has resorted to this farce to politically eliminate the former prime minister. This case has been fabricated without any credible testimony or evidence.” However, the prosecution claims that these allegations have been formed through evidence collected under international law and an impartial investigation.
If the court finds the accused guilty in a case of crimes against humanity, the maximum sentence can be death penalty or life imprisonment. It has been stated that every stage of the trial process will be conducted in accordance with international standards. Several international organizations including the United Nations, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International are also closely monitoring the case.
Thus, a former prime minister is facing a tribunal for crimes against humanity—this is an unprecedented event in the history of Bangladesh. Analysts believe that if the formal trial of this case begins tomorrow, it will create a huge stir not only in the country's politics but also in the international arena.
