The army has recovered about 1,100 sharp weapons from various shops and warehouses in the capital's New Market area. The weapons recovered include samurai knives and chapatis, which have been supplied to juvenile gangs, extortionists and robbers for a long time.
At a briefing held at the Suhrawardy Medical College Army Camp on Saturday night, Mohammadpur Army Camp Commander Lieutenant Colonel Nazim Ahmed said that these weapons were seized after conducting raids for two consecutive days based on intelligence information.
He said, "We are conducting raids to find the source of the type of samurai knives that were being recovered from the arrested terrorists. These weapons have no domestic use. In the last few months, several murders, injuries, extortion and robbery incidents have been carried out using them."
Initial investigations suggest that some traders were renting or selling these weapons to criminals. The intelligence police are investigating whether they are linked to a criminal gang. The recovered weapons will be handed over to the intelligence police and legal action will be taken.
The army has warned traders that in the current situation, the sale of samurai knives or other sharp weapons is completely prohibited. The general public has been urged to immediately report any illegal weapons trade to the nearest army camp.
Lieutenant Colonel Nazim Ahmed warned, “The violence of the teenage gang will be stopped at any cost. The army is firmly in a position to maintain law and order.”
