Bangladesh and Malaysia have expressed their interest in working together to further strengthen bilateral trade, investment and energy cooperation. The two countries have set a goal of concluding a comprehensive free trade agreement by 2027. Bangladesh has also called on Malaysian companies to jointly invest in oil and gas exploration in the Bay of Bengal.
These issues were highlighted in a joint statement issued after Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman met with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim during his visit to Malaysia.
The statement said that Bangladesh is an important trading partner of Malaysia in South Asia. Both sides are interested in expediting the negotiations for a free trade agreement to increase trade and investment between the two countries. Both countries have taken a positive stance on implementing a profitable and future-oriented agreement in line with the global trade situation.
The two prime ministers also welcomed the progress in the formation of the Malaysia-Bangladesh Joint Business Council to strengthen economic cooperation. It is expected that regular discussions and investment cooperation between the private sectors of the two countries will increase through this council.
Emphasis has also been placed on working together in semiconductors, digital economy, halal industry, energy, infrastructure and high-value industries. The joint statement mentioned that there is an opportunity to enhance the partnership between the two countries, especially in technology-based economy and industrial development.
Emphasis has been placed on effectively using the existing memorandum of understanding on liquefied natural gas or LNG supply, LNG infrastructure and petroleum products to increase cooperation in the energy sector. In this regard, the issue of advancing direct talks between Malaysia's Petronas and Bangladesh's Petrobangla has gained importance.
Bangladesh has called on Malaysian companies to invest in oil and gas exploration in the Bay of Bengal. At the same time, opportunities for investment in the extraction of mineral resources including coal, limestone and the renewable energy sector were also discussed.
According to analysts, if this initiative is implemented, Bangladesh-Malaysia relations can gain a new economic dimension. There will be a possibility of deepening cooperation between the two countries, especially in energy security, foreign investment, industrialization and regional trade.
