Aslam Chowdhury loses MP post over loan default

The country's highest court has cancelled the candidacy of BNP's winning candidate in Chittagong-4 constituency Aslam Chowdhury on charges of loan default. The Appellate Division headed by the Chief Justice gave the verdict on Tuesday (June 30). As a result, he will not be able to take oath as a member of parliament.
After the verdict, lawyers said that this is an important precedent for candidates with loan defaults. According to the court's decision, even if he wins the election, a person with a loan default cannot take office as a member of parliament. However, whether the candidate with the second highest number of votes in the constituency will be declared the winner or a new election will be held will be known after the full verdict is published.
Earlier, while participating in the National Parliament election, Aslam Chowdhury was accused of loan default, but the Election Commission declared his nomination valid. Later, a legal challenge was filed in the court against that decision. Although the High Court upheld his candidacy, the matter went to the Appellate Division.
Later, after the final hearing, the Appellate Division ruled to cancel Aslam Chowdhury's candidacy. As a result of this court decision, attention is now focused on the next constitutional and legal steps regarding the representation of the Chittagong-4 constituency.
