A BNP leader was attacked over a row over taking photos while standing in the front row at a political event in Narayanganj. Four Jubo Dal activists have been expelled from the party for their involvement in the incident.
The incident took place at a function organized on the occasion of the martyrdom anniversary of former President Ziaur Rahman at the Narayanganj Zilla Parishad premises on Thursday (June 4) afternoon.
Eyewitnesses said that during the function, the two factions of BNP initially started arguing over taking photos while standing in the front row. At one stage, the situation became heated and there was jostling and tension. Later, senior leaders intervened and calmed the situation.
However, when the function ended, BNP convening committee member Akil Uddin Bhuiyan (70) was allegedly attacked while leaving the Zilla Parishad premises. According to the complaint, a section of the supporters of Jubo Dal member secretary Mashiur Rahman punched and kicked him.
According to local sources, the leaders present at the time quickly moved forward to bring the situation under control and remove the injured leader.
Akil Uddin Bhuiyan alleged that there was a misunderstanding about the matter inside the event and it was later resolved. But after he went outside, he was attacked unexpectedly due to a previous dispute.
On the other hand, Jubo Dal leader Mashiur Rahman claimed that the internal incident was later resolved and he himself resolved the matter. However, he said that he did not know who attacked him later.
The incident has created tension in the political arena. However, it is known that Jubo Dal has expelled four workers from all posts, including primary membership, on charges of violating party discipline.
The officer-in-charge of Fatullah Police Station said that no written complaint has been received so far. Legal action will be taken if a complaint is received.
