The trial has begun against a total of 28 accused, including former minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak and former mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Tapas, in the case of crimes against humanity filed in the capital's Mohammadpur during the July uprising.

On Monday (June 8), the opening statement of the case was presented to a three-member bench led by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder at the International Crimes Tribunal-1. After that, the testimony of the state began.

The state's complaint states that violence broke out during the student-public movement in Mohammadpur area on July 18 and 19, 2024. At that time, some members of the Awami League, Chhatra League and law enforcement agencies have been accused of firing and carrying out repressive activities to suppress the movement. The case states that 9 people were killed and many others were injured.

Four accused are currently in jail in this case. They are the president of the banned Chhatra League's Mohammadpur police station branch, Naimul Hasan Russell, vice-presidents Sajjad Hossain, Omar Faruk and Fazle Rabbi. The remaining 24 accused are said to be absconding.

Earlier on May 10, the tribunal ordered the trial to begin against 28 people by framing charges and today is the date for the start of the testimony.

The case is currently in the initial stages of the judicial process and it is learnt that more evidence will be presented in the next hearing.
