In the wake of the alert for possible terrorist attacks, security has been beefed up at important airports in the country. Of these, a total of eight airports, including the capital's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, have been put on high alert.
On Monday (April 27), Bangladesh Civil Aviation Authority (BCAA) Chairman Air Vice Marshal Md. Mustafa Mahmud Siddique confirmed the matter. Sources said that additional security personnel have been deployed at the entrances, terminals and other sensitive areas of the airports in view of the recent security risks.
At the same time, intelligence surveillance has been increased and special alert has been issued to all units of the law enforcement agencies following the instructions of the Police Headquarters. Searches have been intensified in the arrival and departure areas; additional members in uniform and plain clothes are on duty. Instructions have been given to report immediately if anything suspicious is seen.
Earlier, a warning from the Police Headquarters said that a banned extremist organization is planning possible sabotage. Their targets could include the National Parliament building, law enforcement facilities, religious places of worship, and important public gathering places.
The law enforcement agencies said they are taking maximum precautions to prevent any kind of sabotage and operations are continuing to identify those involved and bring them to justice.
