A teenager named Yamin (15) committed suicide by hanging himself in Tentulia, Panchagarh after not being given a smartphone. This tragic incident took place on Wednesday (May 7) evening in Guabari Guchchagram of Sadar Union of the upazila. Yamin was the son of Abdul Hakim and Sakina Begum.
According to local sources, Yamin had been repeatedly requesting his mother to buy him a smartphone for the past few days. But his mother Sakina Begum is a stone worker, who could not meet the needs of her child. The family's financial hardship is so severe that it is difficult to even afford daily meals.
On Wednesday too, Yamin cried and begged his mother for a phone. But his mother could not do anything helplessly. In the evening, the family members became suspicious when they saw the door of the house closed. They peeked through the window and saw Yamin's lifeless body hanging. The police were immediately informed. Later, the Tentulia police station came and recovered the body and took it to the Upazila Health Complex.
Tentulia Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Musa Mia confirmed the incident and said, “The incident is very sad. It is initially believed to be an accidental death. Further action is being taken after following the legal process.”
UP Chairman Masud Karim Siddiqui said, “No complaint has been received from the family of the deceased. They have applied to receive the body. The matter is in the legal process.”
Yamin’s mother said, crying, “He had been asking for a touch phone for some time. But where can I get money to buy a mobile phone? It is difficult to survive by working as a stonemason. I was not at home, I was working outside... Seeing the door of the house closed and not getting any response even after knocking, I looked out the window...”
Behind this tragic incident, a burning social reality has emerged—the intense pressure of economic hardship and technology addiction. Experts say that this extreme deviation in the mental health of teenagers, family awareness, financial insecurity and social values is pushing our future generation towards an uncertain future.
Locals and social analysts believe that just as the benefits of technology cannot be denied, its misuse and excessive demand can also lead to dire consequences. Due to the lack of family ties and emotional support, children of this age often make extreme decisions.
