Police have arrested a smuggler along with 200 pieces of blankets while smuggling Indian blankets in a trawler in Netrokona's Durgapur. These blankets were recovered during a raid in the Chaitati Ghat area of the Someshwari River in the upazila on Friday (November 1) morning.
The name of the arrested person is Sohel Mia (48). He is a resident of the Chaitati area of Durgapur upazila. In this incident, the police have filed a case against two other people—Rashedul Islam (32) of Gaonkandiya village and Anwar Hossain (38) of Shankarpur village—and three unidentified people. The arrested Sohel Mia was sent to court on Saturday afternoon.
Police said that the raid was conducted on the Someshwari river based on a secret tip-off. Indian blankets were being smuggled in an engine-driven trawler. Sensing the presence of the police, the smugglers tried to escape. However, Sohel Mia was arrested from the spot. At that time, 200 pieces of Indian blankets and an engine-powered trawler were seized, the market value of which is about 3 lakh 15 thousand taka.
The police also said that for a long time this gang had been importing various products, especially blankets, from India and selling them in different parts of the country by evading customs duties. Efforts are underway to identify and arrest other members of the gang.
Durgapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahmudul Hasan said, “The operation was conducted based on confidential information. After filing a case against the detained person, he has been handed over to the court. The operation to arrest the other accused is ongoing.”
