The body of a policeman named Aktaruzzaman (46) has been recovered 22 days after he went missing after returning home from work on leave. On Thursday (December 18), the police recovered his half-decomposed body from a sugarcane field in Naymile village of Satmera union in Panchagarh Sadar upazila.
His identity was identified on Friday (December 19). After receiving the news, his relatives left for Panchagarh in the afternoon to bring the body. Aktaruzzaman was working as a constable at Rampal police station in Bagerhat district of Khulna range. His home is in Jamalta village of Singhajhuli union of Chaugachha upazila of Jessore.
The police and the relatives of the deceased said that on Thursday afternoon, a foul smell was emanating from the sugarcane field of Sumet Ali in the 9.5 mile area of Satmera union in Panchagarh Sadar upazila. Locals entered the field and saw the body lying there and informed the police. The police recovered the body and sent it to the morgue for autopsy. Although the body was initially unidentified, the CID's Crime Scene Unit and the police later identified it.
The deceased's brother-in-law Mamunur Rashid Mamun said, "After seeing the pictures of the pants, shirt and shoes sent by the police, we initially confirmed that the body belongs to my sister's husband. Some of us have already left for Panchagarh. The police said that the body is in the local morgue."
Belal Hossain, the investigation officer of the case and Panchagarh Sadar Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) said that after recovering the body, it has been kept in the morgue for autopsy. The family members have been informed. The autopsy will be completed when they reach the police station.
Regarding the identification process, he further said that the only clue to identify the clueless body was the underwear with the police logo on it. When a police officer noticed the matter, a picture of the pants, shirt and shoes he was wearing was sent to the deceased's wife. She identified the clothes as her husband's after looking at the picture.
Panchagarh Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ashraful Islam said, "It is believed that the person died about two to three weeks ago. Since the body was almost half-dissolved, it is not clear whether it was a murder or some other cause of death. Necessary measures are being taken through the police as well as the CID. Legal proceedings are ongoing in this incident."
Jessore's Chougachha Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rezaul Karim said, "The missing policeman's wife Shahina Akhter filed a GD with the police station on November 28. The GD mentioned that her husband came to Chougachha on November 26 after taking a five-day leave. On November 27 in the morning, he left the house saying he was going to Maheshpur. After that, he did not return home. He also left his used mobile phone at home. "Then we learned that the body of that policeman was found in Panchagarh."
