The heart-wrenching docudrama The Voice of Hind Rajab, about a five-year-old Palestinian child killed in an Israeli attack in Gaza, has won the prestigious Silver Lion award at this year's Venice International Film Festival.
The Silver Lion is awarded as the second best film at this year's Venice International Film Festival, one of the oldest and most prestigious film festivals in the world. The film was directed by French-Tunisian director Kawther Ben Hania. His name appeared on the list of winners in the results announced on Saturday.
The film highlights a heartbreaking incident in Gaza last year. Little Hind Rajab was shot dead by Israeli forces while traveling to shelter in a car with her family. The film includes the child's actual voice recording and her last long phone call with the Palestinian Red Crescent Society. In it, rescue workers can be heard comforting Rajab, who was lying alone in the car in an injured state. But in the end, she could not be saved. Two ambulance workers who went to rescue Rajab were also shot dead.
The film was first screened on Wednesday. At the end of the screening, the audience gave the filmmakers a standing ovation for 23 minutes, which has already become a topic of discussion among film lovers.
Accepting the award, Kawther Ben Hania said, “Hind Rajab’s story is not just about one child; it is the tragic history of an entire nation, who have been victims of genocide for a long time.”
The highest award at this year’s Venice Film Festival, the Golden Lion, was won by American independent director Jim Jarmusch’s film Father Mother Sister Brother.
