Pakistan will also sell oil to India one day: Trump's jab

US President Donald Trump is in the news again — this time targeting India, focusing on Pakistan. In a post on his social media account 'Truth Social' on Wednesday (July 30), Trump said, "We just made a deal with Pakistan. From now on, Washington and Islamabad will work together to develop the huge oil reserves that Pakistan has." At the same time, he predicted, "Who knows, maybe Pakistan will also sell oil to India one day!"
This comment came at a time when Trump announced a 25 percent tariff on goods imported from India and expressed dissatisfaction with India's trade relations with Russia. In that post, Trump said that even though India is a 'friendly country,' it imposes excessive tariffs on US products. That is why India is also facing punishment this time.
Trump also said that the White House will decide which American company will lead the oil extraction project in Pakistan. He said that the agreement will include US investment and technical assistance in developing Pakistan's mineral resources, and this will bring economic benefits to both countries in the future.
Trump's pressure on India is not new. He has complained about New Delhi's "commercial advantages" several times before. But this time the issue became more clear when Trump labeled India's purchase of weapons and energy from Russia as anti-US and said, "Doing business with Russia will be punished."
Meanwhile, after Trump's announcement, India's Ministry of Commerce issued a statement saying that the government will take all necessary steps to protect the country's economic interests. The statement also said that talks are underway between India and the United States for a comprehensive trade agreement, which will be beneficial for both sides.
Trump himself admitted that talks with India are underway and that the issue "will become clearer" by the end of this week. However, he has also expressed dissatisfaction with India's active participation in the BRICS alliance, which is basically known as the 'anti-American bloc'.
Analysts say that this position is not only challenging US-India relations, but also adding a new dimension to the geopolitical balance in South Asia.
