“US Navy on Edge as Dangerous Iranian Drone Raises Security Concerns”

Published: 12:16 5 February 2026
Amid rising tensions in the Middle East, the US Navy destroyed an Iranian drone in the Arabian Sea. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that a Shahid-139 drone was shot down in self-defense after it aggressively approached the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln.
According to US military officials, the drone posed a serious threat and ignored repeated warnings to change course. An F-35C fighter jet was deployed to neutralize the drone. At the time, the carrier was in international waters approximately 800 kilometers off Iran’s southern coast. No US personnel were injured, and the ship sustained no damage.
Tehran has not officially acknowledged any aggressive action. However, Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency reported that contact was lost with one of its drones during an international waters surveillance mission, without providing details on the cause.
Experts say the incident comes at a particularly sensitive time, as diplomatic efforts to restart nuclear talks between Washington and Tehran are ongoing. Hours after the drone was destroyed, CENTCOM also reported that an Iranian boat and drone harassed a US-flagged commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, raising further security concerns.
Over the past decade, Iran has heavily invested in drone technology. The Shahid-139, part of the well-known Shahid drone family, can stay airborne for extended periods and strike targets from long distances. Other advanced drones, including the Mohajer-10 and Kaman-22, as well as jet-powered Karar and Sayyad drones with radar-evasion capabilities, have significantly expanded Iran’s military capabilities. The growing drone fleet continues to be a major concern for Western naval forces operating in the region.
