No agreement despite 21-hour meeting, deadlock in US-Iran talks

The US and Iran have not reached a final agreement after 21 hours of talks held in the Pakistani capital Islamabad. US Vice President JD Vance confirmed the matter.

The meeting, known as the 'Islamabad Talks', began on Saturday afternoon and continued until Sunday. Vance said at a press conference after the talks, "We have talked about many important issues - this is a positive aspect. But we have not reached an agreement yet."

He said that the US has made its position clear - on which issues it is ready to reach an agreement and on which it is not. But the Iranian delegation did not accept the US conditions.

At the beginning of the press conference, Vance praised Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir, saying that they have shown great cooperation and sincerity in the talks. He also noted that Pakistan is not responsible for the lack of progress in these talks; rather, the country has tried its best to bring the two sides closer.

Vance declined to elaborate on which proposals Iran rejected, but said the United States had sought a clear commitment that Iran would not develop nuclear weapons in the future and would refrain from seeking to acquire such a capability.

Vance added, “Our primary goal is to bring Iran’s nuclear program under control. But we haven’t seen that kind of firm commitment yet.”

Analysts say the standoff could reignite tensions in the Middle East. But they remain hopeful that the two sides will return to talks in the future.
