Government will not be able to survive if gas prices are increased: Nahid Islam

The government will face a difficult situation if it takes steps to increase gas prices, said Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) convener and opposition whip Nahid Islam.

He said that if the gas prices are increased by even one taka, people will be dissatisfied and the government will not be able to survive in power.

He made these remarks in a speech to leaders and activists after police obstructed the 11-party alliance's program towards the secretariat on Thursday (August 6).

Accusations of creating an artificial crisis

Nahid Islam alleged that the government is trying to increase prices by artificially creating a gas crisis.

He said that the government has not fulfilled various promises made to the people. He alleged that despite the announcement of not increasing electricity prices, initiatives have been taken to increase gas prices in reality.

The NCP leader said that the implementation of promises made on various issues including employment creation and controlling the rise in commodity prices is not visible.

Allegations about gas, electricity and water crisis

Nahid Islam claimed that the government is creating a crisis by colluding with various syndicates.

He alleged that the government has failed to ensure basic services like gas, electricity and water. Initiatives are being taken to increase prices without meeting the needs of the people.

He also said that employment opportunities in the country have not increased, the prices of daily necessities have increased and the common people are struggling to manage the cost of living.

Warning of stricter programs

Nahid Islam alleged that attacks on opposition students and student representatives and attempts to control campuses are underway in various universities.

He said that if necessary, the alliance will go for stricter programs including besieging the Secretariat as well as the Parliament Building and the Prime Minister's Office.

Calling on the government, he said that the people's promises must be implemented, the results of the referendum must be implemented, gas and electricity supply must be ensured and effective measures must be taken against corruption. Otherwise, the movement will be strengthened further with the people.
